We hosted the first REMODEL annual meeting
The REMODEL consortium met at King’s on 9 and 10 September for its first annual meeting, held in Bush House on the Strand Campus. It brought together researchers from Swansea University, Imperial College London, Queen’s University Belfast, EPCC at the University of Edinburgh and ourselves, together with the programme’s Advisory Board.
The first day ran through the technical work across all six work packages. It opened with multi-physics integration and the simulation capabilities the programme is aiming at, then worked back through what has to be in place to deliver them: parallel and exascale computing, adaptive and hybrid mesh generation, geometry representation, and the use of machine learning in both meshing and the wider workflow. Taking the target capability first and the supporting methods afterwards is a useful way round for a programme this size, because it keeps six work packages pointed at the same end.
The second day was the project’s first Advisory Board meeting, with representatives from Rolls-Royce, Imperial College London, ITI, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Politecnico di Milano reviewing the first year. The Board encouraged the consortium to keep geometry, meshing, adaptation and parallel computing developing as one workflow rather than separately, and recommended common benchmarks and demonstrators that move from controlled test problems towards realistic industrial applications. The day also covered how the project works day to day: collaborative coding, version control, documentation and code sharing, and where generative AI tools fit into research and software development.
